What does the KV rating of an electric motor mean?

KV is the number of revolutions per minute a motor reaches per volt applied, with no load. A motor rated at 1000 KV on 22 volts will in theory spin at 22,000 rpm. The higher the KV, the faster the rotation but the lower the torque; the lower the KV, the more torque and the lower the speed. It is a critical figure: it determines how you match the propeller and the battery.

How do I choose the right KV rating?

It depends on propeller size and the task. Light racing drones with 5-7 inch propellers typically use 1900-2500 KV. Medium UAVs on 8-10 inch propellers suit the 700-1000 KV range. Heavy cargo platforms and agricultural drones with 13-16 inch propellers need 280-500 KV. If you are not sure, send us the take-off weight and the propeller diameter and our engineer will calculate a set for your task.

Why doesn't the motor reach its calculated speed?

The calculated KV figure assumes no load and an ideal supply voltage. In practice four things reduce the speed: the shaft load from the propeller, efficiency losses to heat and friction, the ESC settings (timing and frequency), and battery voltage sag under current. To reach the design rpm, check the whole set: motor, propeller, battery and controller settings.

What is the difference between BLDC and PMSM motors?

A BLDC motor works on a trapezoidal back-EMF waveform. It is simpler to control, cheaper, and a good fit for unmanned aircraft. A PMSM uses a sinusoidal EMF: it runs more smoothly and quietly, with better efficiency at low rpm. The drawback of a PMSM is that it needs a more complex controller with field-oriented control (FOC). The MED range is BLDC, optimised for unmanned aircraft: high power density, low heating and a service life that withstands dynamic loads.

Which ESC do MED motors need?

It depends on the model. A 35-50 A controller running BLHeli32 or AM32 is enough for the MED 2812. For the MED 3115 we recommend 60-80 A from the same series. The MED-100 needs an industrial ESC from 100 A upwards supporting high voltage, 12-14S and above. All our motors are compatible with standard BLHeli and AM32 controllers. We will help you pick a specific ESC when you order.

How do I calculate the motor-propeller-battery set?

Send us the take-off weight of the platform, the propeller diameter and the battery voltage, and we will come back with a recommended model and operating point. For non-standard configurations — heavy UAVs, special propellers, hybrid power sources — send the technical specification through the contact form. An engineer will do the calculation within 1-2 business days.

What is the service life of a MED motor?

The stated figure is from 2,000 hours mean time between failures under normal load, meaning 60-70 % of peak power. In practice it depends heavily on the duty cycle: overloads, overheating and operation in dust and moisture all shorten it. We have our own bench facilities and every batch passes outgoing inspection before shipping. Test reports for a specific series are available on request.

What is the maximum power of the 3115, 2812 and MED-100 motors?

MED 2812: up to 800 W, for light quadcopters and racing drones. MED 3115: up to 2,500 W, for medium and cargo UAVs. MED-100: up to 8 kW, for heavy platforms, vertical take-off aircraft and agricultural drones. These are short-term peak figures; continuous operation is 60-70 % of peak. Are Motorno motors suitable for agricultural drones?

Yes — the MED-100 is the usual choice for agriculture. Its 6-8 kW is enough to lift a 30-50 kg payload: spray tanks and precision farming equipment. Basic protection is IP54. On request we build IP65 versions for operation in dust, humidity and around agrochemicals. Our partners already use them in commercial agricultural projects.

Which motor should I choose for a racing drone?

For 5-6 inch racing frames, the MED 2812 at 2300-2500 KV suits well: highly responsive and light. For freestyle on 7-8 inch propellers, use the MED 2812 at 1900 KV or the MED 3115 at 1500 KV. For long-range and camera platforms from 10 inches upwards, the MED 3115 at 700-900 KV on 10-13 inch propellers is the usual pick. For a specific match, send us your parameters.

Can your motors be used in commercial UAVs?

Yes. MED motors run in commercial platforms for surveying, aerial photography, power line inspection and agriculture, and in public-sector projects. Motorno is a resident of the Skolkovo innovation centre and holds Small Technology Company status, which gives partners preferential treatment in public procurement through the Ministry of Industry registry of unmanned systems.

Can I get a test sample?

Yes, we send samples for testing and integration. Send the request through the contact form, attaching a technical specification or a description of your platform and naming the models you want to test. Shipping terms are agreed individually. For long-term contracts and pilot projects with unmanned systems integrators, test batches are sometimes free of charge.

Do you do contract manufacturing under the customer's brand?

Yes — contract manufacturing under the customer's brand is one of our main lines of work. We build motors to your technical specification: custom KV ratings, mounting dimensions, shafts, lead lengths and marking under your brand. Minimum series from 100 units. Our own automated line with a capacity of 10,000 units a month handles both pilot batches and large series orders to fixed deadlines.

How is delivery arranged? Is collection possible?

Export shipments are arranged individually: tell us the destination country and the quantity and we will quote the carrier, cost and lead time. Collection from the production site in Perm is possible by prior arrangement through the contact form. For wholesale batches we can organise dedicated transport or hand over to the customer's logistics centre.

What warranty do Motorno motors carry?

12 months from the date of sale against manufacturing defects: hidden faults in windings, bearings and magnets. Not covered: mechanical damage from crashes, overheating caused by a badly matched ESC, water ingress into motors without an IP rating, and operation above the rated load. A warranty claim is made through the contact form and needs photos, video and a description of how the motor was used.
